The COVID 19 Effect.

I’m not sure about you, but back in January when all this Corona Virus talk started, I don’t think I really believed that it would have a huge effect on us here in Australia, or here in our small coastal community of Inverloch.  Maybe it was denial, maybe I was putting my head in the sand, or maybe I was just trying to be positive?

The reality is, it’s having an enormous effect on each and every one of us.  Sure, some more than others, and in different ways, but it is touching us all.  In some ways its only early days yet, with the worst most likely yet to come, but we feel it’s important here at MATTA to share with you some of the effects it has had on our small, locally made label until now.

Back in January we were expecting to receive a delivery of fabric for sampling each of our garments in, but most of this was held up overseas, with shipments being stopped, and no surety as to when it would/could be sent.  We decided this option was way too risky for our small little label, so started exploring other options that involved using fabric that was already in the country.  In the end we hedged our bets a little and ordered some fabric from overseas, and the balance from within Australia.  Our sampling arrived in the 3rd week of March, with our production fabric arriving the week after.

The delays in our fabric has obviously led to delays with our production here in Melbourne.  We’re still unsure if this has been a good or a bad thing, but the delay gave us time to see and realise the potential impact of COVID-19 on our winter season for MATTA, and allowed us to change and pivot our plans at short notice.

While we know we have a strong, loyal customer base who have made it clear that they’re desperately waiting for our new seasons arrivals, hehe, we decided to make some cut backs to the number of new styles that we made, and to reduce our overall quantity to lower our risk.  Keeping in mind that the pattern making, sampling, fabric costs and production costs are all paid for before we even start selling our product.  You’ve got to be able to sleep at night right?

So now we find ourselves in the middle of April 2020, having launched 3 of our winter 2020 styles a week or so ago, with the balance hopefully next week.  Not quite what we’d planned, but it is what it is, and we’ll have it all up and online as soon as we can.

As you may already be aware, we stock our MATTA Clothing brand in our two Mookah Studio retail stores, but as of nearly two weeks ago we made the very difficult decision to temporarily close our doors, for the safety and protection of all.  This decision will be reviewed weekly, but between all of this and no markets for the foreseeable future, to say these are certainly difficult and trying times is perhaps an understatement. But one thing is for sure, we will get through to the other side, together

Stay safe everyone!
